Individual Psychotherapy for Adults
My approach is characterized by curiosity, compassion, and the capacity to be present, non-judgmentally and empathically. Through the development of a reliable therapeutic relationship, we’ll work collaboratively to identify, reflect upon and gain insight into experiences and patterns that contribute to imbalance. By exploring thoughts, emotions, sensations, actions, our work together will facilitate greater well-being.
Each individual is unique, and there is no one-size-fits all approach to psychotherapy. Therefore, based on what you are needing, I utilize a variety of techniques and approaches. These are drawn from but not limited to clinical hypnosis, relational-cultural theory, mindfulness-based approaches, somatic/body-centered therapy, psychodynamic therapy, interpersonal neurobiology, motivational interviewing, and attachment theory. I also provide EMDR therapy – see below for more details.
As a clinical social worker, my approach to psychotherapy is also influenced by the following principles from the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW): respecting your right to self-determination, promoting your right to participation, treating you as a whole person, and helping you identify and develop strengths.
Social work is based on respect for the inherent worth and dignity of all people… Social workers should uphold and defend each person’s physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual integrity and well-being….Social workers should act in relation to the people using their services with compassion, empathy and care.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy
I provide EMDR therapy to address trauma (subjective experiences of an event or events that overwhelm one’s ability to cope – for a broad definition see this description by the Sidran Institute), vicarious trauma as well addictions.
[EMDR] is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma… The goal of EMDR therapy is to process completely the experiences that are causing problems … and to leave you with the emotions, understanding, and perspectives that will lead to healthy and useful behaviors and interactions.
